Chapter Ten

“Have you ever dated a client?” Brice asked after they had lain together for some time. Dakota turned his head, and his eyes narrowed in on Brice. He didn't speak for several breaths. “Have you?”

Brice lifted his head and propped it onto his hand as he lay on his side, facing Dakota. “Of course not. It's unethical in my line of work.”

Dakota shrugged and turned onto his back, hands behind his head. “Same here.”

Brice's brows lowered. “Massage therapists go by the same state laws as doctors and nurses. It's unethical to be so intimately involved with someone you're treating. Unless there's written bylaws for escorts, I don't think it's the same idea.”

Dakota glanced at him before focusing back on the ceiling. “It's never a good idea to mix business with pleasure. It doesn't matter what profession you're in.”

It made sense. Even a hired escort had to have lines that were not to be crossed too, right? Still, Dakota's reaction made Brice's stomach fill with apprehension at having to say good-bye when their time together was up. It was odd, this feeling. He couldn't remember having the same reaction to the thought of someone he'd known for so little time leaving. Despite the immediate attraction and the strong connection he was starting to feel, it couldn't be possible that he was actually developing feelings for the man hired to have sex with him, could it?

“So, have you?” Brice persisted, not wanting to dwell on his thoughts.

Dakota let out a long breath and closed his eyes. Again, he didn't answer right away. “Been there, done that, and burned the fucking T-shirt, Brice. Not mixing my personal life with my profession was a lesson I learned the hard way.”

“Did you love him?”

“It was a she,” replied Dakota, correcting Brice's assumption. “But what does an eighteen-year-old know of love? Especially when she was a rich thirtyyear-old widow looking for a stud to show off.” His anger was unmistakable. Whoever this woman was, she had really hurt him. However, Brice didn't miss the fact that he'd shared the same age difference as the mysterious woman. Only this time Dakota was the older one and Brice the younger man.

“I'm sorry.” What else could he say? Brice had yet to be bitten by the lovebug, thankfully. But that didn't mean he'd not been hurt by someone he'd loved in his life.

Dakota opened his eyes and looked at Brice. “Ancient history. What do you say we get cleaned up? I saw extra sets of sheets in the bathroom too.”

Seeing that the subject was changed, Brice nodded and stood up. What else were they to do? They were stranded in this warehouse until Winter returned. Might as well take advantage of its comforts.

Dakota rose from the bed and took Brice's hand so he could lead him into the bathroom. He didn't know why he'd disclosed information about his past. He hadn't thought of Ava in years. Brice, he was discovering, was easy to talk to and didn't appear to judge him for his career choice.
